Below are the main religions that can be found in the 15 former Soviet Republics. The percentages represent the total number of adherents to a specific religion out of the total population of the 15 former Soviet Republics combined, which as of 2000-2001 was estimated to be 291,652,566. No distinction is made between nominal religious adherents and devote practitioners. Religions marked with a dash, ie, (--), are religions for which numerical data was not available. Please note that although the exact distribution of Muslims between Sunni and Shi'a is not known, it is believed that the majority of Muslims that reside in the 15 former Soviet Republics are Sunni Muslims.
