1. Russia is the world’s largest country, covering an area of 17,075,200 sq km. Ninety nine and a half percent of that area is land (16,995,800 sq km) while water makes up just half a percent of the total area (79,400 sq km).

 

The table below shows how Russia compares to 20 of the world's largest countries. Note that it is almost twice the size of Canada (1.7), the United States (1.8) and China (1.8).

2. Today's Russian Federation (Russia for short) is the main successor to the Soviet Union. In 1992, the Soviet Union split into 15 independent nations (see table below). At its largest, the Soviet Union was 22,275,858 square miles in area. Since the 1992 breakup, Russia shed more than 5.2 million square miles of area. Of that, 79% was in Asia and 21% in Europe. The table below shows what nations emerged from the breakup of the Soviet Union (note: Russia not shown).
