Eduard Ivanovich, Count Totleben

A Russian army officer and engineer, born in 1818. He entered upon a military career and was captain of engineers from 1848 to 1856 during the Russian expeditions against Schamyl, the rebel. He distinguished himself in 1853 in the war against Turkey, and during the Crimean War (1854 to 1856) was chiefly responsible for the construction of the fortifications at Sebastopol.

For his successful blockade at Plevna in the Russo – Turkish War (1877 – 1878) he was appointed commander in chief of the Russian army. He was made governor general of Odessa (1879) and of Vilna (1880).
He was the author of Defense de Sebastopol (1864-1872) and died in Germany in 1884.
