Tyumen is the capital of the Tyumen region, on the Tura River in South Western SIberian Russia.

Economic Activity

The city is a major transfer point for river and rail freight. The area surrounding the city is rich in petroleum and natural gas, and the city itself has machine plants and shipyards.

Overview

Tyumen was founded in 1585 by Yermak and is the oldest city in Siberia. In the past it was an important center of trade with China. When oil was discovered in Western Siberia, the city saw a considerable increase in it's population.
